Cake servings

Wedding Cake Servings Calculator

Calculate exactly how many servings your wedding cake will yield based on your tier sizes and cut style, so you order the right amount without leftover waste or shortage.

Start here

Use this interactive calculator to input the diameter, height, and number of tiers you are considering. It will output the total servings based on standard cutting guidelines. You can adjust tier sizes and see how changes affect the total count. The calculator also factors in whether you want a kitchen cake or a display-only topper.

Who is eating cake

Plan against RSVPs, not invitations.

100% is the safe default.

Options

What this calculator works out

Calculate exactly how many servings your wedding cake will yield based on your tier sizes and cut style, so you order the right amount without leftover waste or shortage.

It answers

  • What cut style will your caterer use — dessert slices, buffet squares, or reception finger portions?
  • How many tiers do you want, and what are the diameters of each?
  • Will you reserve the top tier to freeze for a future celebration?
  • Do you need a separate kitchen cake to serve extra guests not covered by the display cake?
  • What is the minimum height per tier your baker will supply — 4-inch, 5-inch, or 6-inch tall layers?

Run the numbers: a wedding cake calculator example

Sizing a tiered cake to a confirmed guest count

  1. 95 confirmed guests, all of them eating cake: 95 servings needed.
  2. Wedding-cut servings per tier from the chart: 6 inch 12, 8 inch 24, 10 inch 38.
  3. The 6 inch top tier is saved, so 62 servings reach guests.
  4. That leaves the cake 33 servings short.
  5. The smallest round stack that covers 95 is 6 + 8 + 10 + 12 inch round (130 servings).
  6. At $7.50 a serving, the cake as designed costs $555.00.

Where this usually goes wrong

These are the failure modes that cost real money or real time. Each one is avoidable if you catch it before you sign.

Watch for

  • Assuming all caterers cut the same size – ordering based on dessert slices but your venue cuts buffet squares gives too much cake.
  • Forgetting to account for a display-only top tier or dummy that does not add servings, leaving you short on actual cake.
  • Basing tier sizes on a generic online chart without verifying with your baker’s actual pan sizes and layer counts.

Your wedding cake calculator checklist

Your wedding cake calculator checklist

  • Confirm your guest count and expected cake-eating percentage with your caterer.
  • Choose a cut style and input it into the calculator.
  • Decide on tier diameters that fit your cake stand and venue size.
  • Ask your baker for the exact finished height of each tier.
  • Factor in whether you want to save the top tier and adjust tier sizes accordingly.
  • Compare the total servings from the calculator to your guest count and order a kitchen cake if needed.

Questions about wedding cake calculator

How do I know what cut style my venue uses?

Ask your caterer or venue coordinator directly — they will tell you their standard slice dimensions. If they don't have a set size, request a dessert slice (1x2 inches) for accurate planning.

Should I order a kitchen cake even if my display cake seems big enough?

A kitchen cake can save money if your display cake would need an extra tier only to cover a small number of guests. Compare the cost per serving of a larger display tier versus a sheet cake kept in the kitchen.

What if I want to save the top tier for our first anniversary?

Plan a separate 6-inch tier solely for freezing so you don't have to cut into the decorated top tier on your wedding day. Ask your baker to wrap it properly and confirm it will freeze well for the duration.

Your next decision

Now that you know your serving count, decide on your wedding cake design and flavors with our design guide.

Assumptions this calculator makes

  • Servings use the wedding cut: slices about 1 by 2 inches from tiers about 4 inches tall, as in the Wilton wedding cake serving chart.
  • Party-size slices are larger, so the same cake serves fewer people. If your baker cuts differently, enter their servings per tier instead.
  • Plan against confirmed guests, not invitations sent.
  • The share of guests who eat cake is your own estimate; 100% is the safe default.
  • A saved top tier is not served, so it does not count towards the guests it has to feed.

What it does not do

  • Tier sizes outside 6 to 14 inches, and shapes other than round and square, need the baker's own serving count.
  • Extra-tall or double-barrel tiers serve more than the chart shows; ask the baker for their count.
  • The price is only the per-serving price you enter. Delivery, setup, stands and cake-cutting fees are separate.
